River Duero starts in the mountains south of Rioja and flows through Spain into Portugal where it is called Douro. Rueda and Toro are two of the Designations of Origin from the Castilla y León region layed on the banks of the River Duero that is home to many other wine regions spread along its full length. Rueda is home to the much-celebrated Spanish white wine while Toro is the home to one of the most full-bodied red wines of Spain. The proximity of these two regions does not stop them from being so different from one another and in thus, ensuring your travel through their vine lands will be full of adventure.
Situated in-between Toro and Ribera del Duero, Rueda differs from these other two DOs as it focuses on white wine production. Rueda is a region of a plain patchwork of vineyards home to a rare indigenous white grape called Verdejo. Over the centuries this land was fought by the kings of Castile and Aragon, and the countryside is scattered with medieval castles.
In the middle of Castille y Leon, a land of wheat fields, feudal castles and Romanesque churches, Toro is a fascining historic town. Its strategic location gave rise to it being a site of conflict during all the Middle Age, a court of kings and the capital of the province in the 19th century. The legend has it that the medieval clock tower in Toro was built with a mortar that was made with cement, sand, and the local red wine. Seemingly, as far as the townsfolk were concerned, there was so much Tinta de Toro on hand that they saw it pointless to walk downhill of few hundred metres to the Duero River banks to collect water to moisten the paste.

One of them, the older of the two, was the location of the signing of the famous Treaty of Tordesillas, with which Spain and Portugal divided up the territories of the New World.
There are a number of leisure options available in the area around the city. You will find locations offering karting, paintball and ATVs within just a few kilometers. If you like river-based tourism, you can navigate the Pisuerga River and Catilla Canal, located 45 km away. Another option is winery tourism, as Tordesillas is near four of the most important designations of origin in Spain: Rueda, Toro, Ribera del Duero and Cigales.
Guided visit to the Pagos del Rey Museum of Wine
Get ready for a discovery of DO Toro. At only 20 minutes’ drive from Tordesillas you will arrive at Morales de Toro. Here you will visit a Wine Museum that will introduce you to the ancestral relationship between this land and the excellent and renowned wines produced by its vineyards.
The museum is housed in one of the production units of the old cooperative, a spacious facility from the middle of the 20th century, where you can learn all the secrets about wine history and winemaking, being inside the tanks where fermentation was made in the past. Toro and its history will surprise you with its art, or science. The barrel cellar, that holds the largest number of barrels in the appellation of Toro, will be visited at the final part of the tour, before tasting the wines in the museum shop and have some tapas of local food from Zamora Region.

Complete your tour of the wine culture by eating at one of the most unique restaurants in the province of Zamora. The Restaurant itself is an old restored 18th century “Panera”.
