The Destination

El Bierzo

El Bierzo

Right on the border between Galicia and Castilla y Leon, Bierzo is another wine region, maybe of a kind that wine lovers dream to discover. This remote verdant DO is a little known embraced by a lush, beautiful landscape.

The vineyards themselves are among the most beautiful in Spain. Many are planted in picturesque terraces along the steep slopes of the Sil river valley, some with such marked inclination that mules are used for the harvest. The heart and soul of Bierzo is Cacabelos, a buzzing market town and an essential stop along Spain's legendary pilgrim's route, the Camino de Santiago. Although the wine business is centred here, this pretty riverside town is hardly Bierzo's only attraction. Large towns like Ponferrada and Vilafranca del Bierzo tempt with Templar castles, medieval monasteries, and once-extravagant palaces.

Detailed Itinerary

El Bierzo arrival
day 1

El Bierzo - arrival

Accommodation: Parador de Villafranca del Bierzo 4*
Av. Calvo Sotelo, 28, 24500 Villafranca del Bierzo, León

At the entrance to Villafranca del Bierzo, town of churches, monasteries, convents and fine buildings, stands this Parador, the leading tourist accommodation in the fascinating El Bierzo district. It is surrounded by mountains covered with cherry and fig trees, slopes dotted with chestnuts, poplars and small farms. The building is clad in stone and slate, in the vernacular style of the region. The interior exudes all the elegance, class and comfort of a contemporary building, especially the large restaurant, café and guest lounge. This last room is a particularly pleasant spot to meet and chat. Large windows in the guest rooms offer extraordinary views of the northwestern El Bierzo district and southern Ancares Mountains. In the garden you can enjoy the seasonal swimming pools, one of which has a sauna with ice fountain.

The pilgrimage route to Compostela stops for a brief rest in Villafranca del Bierzo, offering a small taste of what lies ahead in the Galician capital. Santiago Church; the famous Los Tejedores (Weavers) neighborhood; La Anunciada, a building constructed atop the ruins of an old pilgrim hospital; and the collegiate church are just some of the important sights for visitors.

Outside town, nature offers up gorgeous picture postcard views. 20 minutes away by car, you will discover Las Médulas de Carucedo, a historic site and one of the most stunning landscapes in the province of León. Without a doubt, it is the jewel of El Bierzo. Because of its unique features, this spectacular reddish landscape, which was a gold mine in Roman times, has been declared a World Heritage Site. And because of its historical importance, it is also a cultural park.

El Bierzo - departure

Private 4x4 tour and tastings at Pittacum Winery
Pittacum is a winery of Terras Gauda located in Arganza -El Bierzo-, that is set in a typical building of the 19 century where the stone and the slate are the main actors. The winery is at only 6 km from Cacabelos and at 14 km from Villafranca del Bierzo, two towns united by the Way of Saint James.

Your private tour starts by 4x4 dive through the Bierzo landscape until you reach the vineyard. On the next step, have a visit in the winery to discover the wine making secrets of the area. Your experience will be complete by the tasting of 3 wines, three different expressions of Mencía grape, the "queen" of El Bierzo.

Included in the experience:
- Tour by 4x4 through the Bierzo landscape until the vineyard
- Visit in the winery to discover its wine making secrets
- Tasting of 3 wines PETIT PITTACUM, PITTACUM and VAL DE LA LOBA

Lunch at local restaurant
Enjoy the local cuisine in this charming restaurant. In a space hundreds of years old, you can discover the star dishes of the Bierzo, paired with its great wines. And if heaven permits, you can enjoy its beautiful historic courtyard, to enjoy your food under the wisteria.
