Porto, where ‘Portugal’, the country’s name, comes from, is also the origin of the name for ‘Port’ which is considered the city’s official dessert wine.
Like Lisbon, it is an ancient city with an interesting medieval labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, and like Lisbon, it shares an ocean coast and a riverbank.
But there the similarity ends. Known as the City of Bridges, Porto has a slower pace and perhaps a more intense gastronomic presence. When you think of Porto, you think of meandering among pastel coloured houses or cruising the river or strolling through art galleries. Here, memories, like a good wine, slowly develop
