Most people associate the word ‘Rioja’ with ‘Spanish wine’, and rightly so, but there is so much more to this autonomous northern region. In fact, the word ‘indulge’ might have been created for Rioja.
The region is deep with historical roots. The first words written in Spanish occurred here in the 11th century. In addition to the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, the landscape is dotted with UNESCO designated monasteries, all of which merit a visit.
No matter where you start; no matter which direction you head; vistas of natural beauty will entice you. In fact, there is only one city in the entire region, the capital, Logrono. All the other urban centres are either towns or villages.
With over 500 wineries, Rioja offers an incredible variety of wines for tasting and wineries for visiting. Tempranillo is the dominant grape, and 80% of the world’s Tempranillo vineyards are in Rioja. If you like Cabernet Sauvignon, you will probably love these Spanish red wines.
